About The Rail
Housed in a turn-of-the-century train station building on Bloomington’s near north side, The Rail opened in September of 2011. Originally the luggage storage building for the Monon Line, the building was still in use through the mid-1950s.
Every attempt was made to restore the building to its original state; the exposed stone pillars around the back bar as well as the ceiling and the floors in the rear of the building. Trains, mostly delivering coal to the nearby Indiana University power plant, still come by mere feet from the building multiple times a night and add to the ambiance.
